About Wieringen
Welcome to Wieringen, the best-kept secret of the Netherlands! Wieringen, once an island in the Wadden Sea, is a unique place where nature, history, and culture come together. Here, you can enjoy breathtaking views over the Wadden Sea, the IJsselmeer, and the characteristic Dutch polders. The fresh sea breeze and the special landscape, shaped by glaciers during the penultimate Ice Age, make this an enchanting destination. With its rich history, from Viking settlements to the construction of the Afsluitdijk, Wieringen remains a place that has never fully lost its island character.
History
Wieringen has a fascinating history. During the penultimate Ice Age, a moraine formed here, which later caused the area to rise above the surrounding seas as an island. In 1170, after a great storm surge, Wieringen became a real island, surrounded by water. The name Wieringen comes from the Old Frisian word 'wir,' which means height, referring to the higher elevation of the island.
During the Middle Ages, Wieringen was an important area, partly due to its strategic location along the shipping route. The Church held large estates here, and traces of Viking settlements have been found, including silver treasures near Westerklief. In the 20th century, life on Wieringen changed dramatically with the Zuiderzee works, which eventually made the island part of the mainland.
In short, whether you come for peace, nature, culture, or simply to get away from it all, Wad Leuk and Wieringen offer something for everyone!
